Gill lost the game due to personal attacks.
585 runs in the first two Tests. Shubman Gill scored a total of 22 runs in the third Test against England at Lord’s. Sanjay Manjrekar has found out the reason why the Indian captain failed in the third Test.
Gill lost the game due to personal attacks.
Shubman Gill had an argument with England opener Jack Crawley towards the end of the third day of the Lord’s Test. Former Indian cricketer and current commentator Sanjay Manjrekar believes that the incident had an impact on Gill’s batting during the run chase the next day. In a video on ESPNcricinfo, Manjrekar said, “When Gill came out to bat on the fourth day, it was expected that England would respond to him. It is normal to lose temper, it happens. But Virat Kohli’s case was different, he would get more excited in the match and do better in the batting. In Gill’s case, it was the opposite. He looked quite hesitant to see him. Now we hear the words on the stump mic, there were some personal attacks. But Gill was not ready to handle it, and that affected his batting.’ According to Manjrekar, Indian players are now welcomed in a relatively friendly environment abroad. So such abuse was a new experience for Gill. And that showed unusual weakness with the bat, ‘The way Gill was batting with great control in this series, handling good balls easily, suddenly it was lost. He missed 4 times in 9 balls, there was a review situation, and he came LBW with the next ball. Gill’s defense is not that easy to break, so I am sure the mental stress has affected it.’
Manjrekar’s words are clear, Gill’s loss of temper has not had a positive effect on his batting. The fourth Test of the England-India ‘Anderson-Tendulkar’ Trophy will start in Manchester on July 23.
